A day before Diwali, harrowing time for Mumbai commuters
MUMBAI: On the eve of India's popular festival Diwali, lakhs of commuters were caught off guard on Monday when staff of central and harbour railway lines went on an impromptu strike.
The strike was called by the train guards but the railway authorities denied it. Senior PRO of central railways said, "It was just a shortage of staff and not agitation by our employees."
Sources, however, said the agitating staff had served prior notice to the railway authorities to resolve overtime payment issues, failing which they will go on strike on October 28th, the Diwali day.

The agitating staff, however, decided to carry out their threat a day before the deadline.
Hassled commuters were seen walking on tracks or frantically trying to board crowded buses or hailing cabs, outside railway stations in central Mumbai.
Thirty local trains services were affected from 8:45 am to 4:30 pm late afternoon. The services returned to normal only after the agitating staff returned to work. Trains on the western line and the outstation trains were unaffected by the sudden strike.
Around 30 lakh commuters travel on central and harbour lines every day.
